Fragments of Passage is an original neutral abstract diptych by contemporary artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026.
The artwork consists of two 85 × 85 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, forming a large two-panel composition approximately 170 × 85 cm, excluding the space between the canvases.
I created this diptych around the idea of transition—the moment when one space ends and another begins, leaving behind fragments, traces and connections.
Rather than depicting a recognizable place, I imagined an abstract structure built from intersecting lines, open spaces and partially erased forms. Some elements feel architectural and deliberate, while others dissolve into spontaneous gestures and richly layered surfaces. The palette brings together sophisticated neutrals: warm beige, ivory, soft white, greige, taupe and stone grey. These lighter areas are contrasted by charcoal black, espresso brown, deep umber and smoky grey, creating strong structural accents throughout the composition.
One canvas introduces cooler notes of pale blue, powder blue and blue-grey, while warmer passages of ochre, amber, caramel, burnt sienna and earthy brown create subtle points of connection between the two paintings.
I developed both canvases gradually using professional acrylic paints, palette knives and brushes, combining layering, glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques and expressive gestural mark-making.
Paint was repeatedly applied, partially removed and rebuilt. This process allows earlier layers to remain visible through broken edges, translucent areas, scraped passages and irregular marks, giving the surfaces a sense of depth and history.
Fine linear details contrast with heavier areas of paint. They can suggest fragments of architectural drawings, coordinates or pathways, while freer white gestures interrupt the geometry and introduce movement.
From a distance, Fragments of Passage appears structured and balanced. Viewed closely, that order begins to dissolve into overlapping lines, imperfect edges, subtle color transitions and traces of the painting process.
This tension is central to my work. I am interested in the place where geometry meets gesture, structure meets intuition, and precision meets imperfection.
The physical space between the two canvases is also part of the composition. It creates a pause, separating the paintings while allowing colors, lines and visual rhythms to continue from one panel to the other.
For me, Fragments of Passage is about what remains as we move through spaces, experiences and memories. Some elements stay clearly defined; others become layered, fragmented or partially erased.
With each canvas measuring 85 × 85 cm, the diptych creates a substantial horizontal artwork approximately 170 × 85 cm, excluding the gap. Its combination of beige, ivory, taupe, black, brown, grey, pale blue and warm ochre tones makes it particularly suited to contemporary, minimalist and neutral interiors.
This is a one-of-a-kind original abstract diptych, painted entirely by hand in 2026. Both paintings are signed on the front and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
The canvases are sold unstretched and unframed and will be carefully shipped rolled in a protective tube. They can be professionally stretched onto wooden stretcher bars after arrival.
