Threshold of Stillness is an original large neutral abstract painting by contemporary artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026.
Measuring 150 × 100 cm, this horizontal acrylic painting on canvas combines warm beige and taupe tones with black, brown, white and cool grey in a composition that moves between geometric abstraction, architectural forms and abstract landscape.
I created this painting around the idea of a threshold—a quiet point between two spaces, two states, or two moments.
The composition began with broad areas of color rather than a predetermined image. Large fields of warm beige, sand, taupe and soft greige developed alongside cooler passages of pale grey, blue-grey and muted slate. I introduced deep espresso brown, charcoal and near-black to create contrast and visual weight, while layers of ivory, off-white and broken white bring light and openness into the composition.
Gradually, a strong horizontal division appeared across the canvas. It can suggest a distant shoreline, an architectural boundary, a reflection on water or simply the meeting point between two abstract spaces. I intentionally left the interpretation open.
The upper part of the painting feels more architectural and solid, while the lower areas become softer and more atmospheric. Around the center, this controlled geometry begins to dissolve. Paint drips downward, edges become irregular and traces of earlier layers remain visible beneath the final surface.
This transition between structure and movement became the emotional center of the painting. I worked with professional acrylic paints using brushes and palette knives, building the surface through layering, glazing, scraping, dragging, dry-brush techniques and controlled dripping. Some passages remain smooth and restrained, while others preserve scratches, broken edges, overlapping paint and visible traces of the creative process.
From a distance, Threshold of Stillness appears minimal and carefully structured. Seen closely, the surface reveals subtle variations of beige, grey, white and brown, translucent layers and spontaneous marks.
For me, stillness is not the absence of movement. A quiet surface can contain traces of everything that has already happened and the possibility of what may happen next. The painting does not depict a specific landscape, building or place. Instead, it creates an ambiguous visual space where architectural abstraction, geometric painting and atmospheric landscape overlap. Depending on the viewer, its forms may evoke walls, windows, water, distant terrain, reflections or fragments of an imagined environment. The restrained beige, black, brown, grey and white color palette gives the painting a sophisticated neutral character, while its strong contrasts and large 150 × 100 cm format create a substantial visual presence.
This one-of-a-kind contemporary artwork can become a statement piece for a modern, minimalist, contemporary, Japandi or neutral interior, particularly in a living room, bedroom, dining area, office or other large architectural space. Threshold of Stillness is an original painting created entirely by hand in 2026 and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
