The Space Between Reflections is an original large neutral abstract diptych by contemporary artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026.
Consisting of two acrylic paintings on canvas, each measuring 80 × 100 cm, this textured contemporary artwork combines warm beige, ivory, taupe, cool blue-grey, charcoal black and earthy brown in a composition inspired by architecture, light, water and reflection.
I created this diptych around the idea that two paintings can share the same visual language while expressing entirely different emotions. I wanted the two canvases to feel connected, but not identical. Each painting has its own atmosphere, its own relationship with light and its own rhythm. Together, they create a visual conversation between structure and movement, warmth and coolness, solidity and openness.
The first canvas is built around a grounded palette of warm beige, sand, ivory, taupe, stone grey and earthy brown. These soft neutral colors are contrasted by expressive passages of charcoal black, deep espresso brown, graphite grey and muted slate blue.
A strong horizontal division crosses the composition, intersecting with a vertical architectural form. Below this intersection, darker areas dissolve into cool blue-grey tones, creating an impression of depth, shadow and reflection.
The second painting offers a lighter, more atmospheric interpretation of the same idea. Here, luminous layers of soft white, ivory, pale cream, misty blue-grey and delicate cool blue meet warmer passages of beige, greige, taupe and muted earthy brown. Dark accents of charcoal, graphite, blue-black and espresso brown introduce structure and visual tension.
Although both paintings share horizontal and vertical elements, their contrasting arrangements create a sense of movement across the diptych. One canvas feels more grounded and architectural, while the other appears open, luminous and almost weightless.
For me, this relationship became the emotional center of The Space Between Reflections. I developed both paintings using professional acrylic paints, palette knives and brushes, combining layering, glazing, scraping, dragging, dry-brush techniques and expressive gestural mark-making. Some areas were repeatedly painted and partially removed, revealing earlier layers beneath the surface. Others retain irregular edges, scratches, broken lines and subtle traces of spontaneous movement. These techniques create a richly textured surface where geometric forms meet softer atmospheric passages. I have always been fascinated by the relationship between architecture, water, glass and reflections. A rigid structure can become fluid when reflected in water. A straight line can transform into a distant shoreline. A dark vertical form may suggest a building, a shadow or a reflection. In this diptych, I wanted those interpretations to remain open. The paintings do not represent a specific location. Instead, they exist between geometric abstraction, architectural abstract art and atmospheric abstract landscape painting.
The horizontal and vertical lines create a recognizable sense of structure, while translucent layers and expressive textures introduce movement and uncertainty. An important part of the composition is the physical space between the two canvases. That small distance allows the paintings to remain independent while visually connecting them. For me, it represents the invisible relationship between two moments, two perspectives or two reflections of the same imagined environment.
This idea inspired the title The Space Between Reflections. From a distance, the diptych appears balanced and harmonious. Viewed closely, its surfaces reveal intricate textures, subtle tonal variations, translucent layers and expressive details. The combination of beige, grey, ivory, white, soft blue, charcoal and brown creates a sophisticated neutral palette that works beautifully in contemporary interiors. With each canvas measuring 80 × 100 cm, the two paintings form a substantial composition approximately 160 × 100 cm, excluding the gap between the panels. This large two-panel abstract painting is particularly suitable as statement wall art above a sofa, in a spacious living room, modern bedroom, dining room or contemporary office. Its restrained palette complements minimalist, Scandinavian, Japandi and modern luxury interior design, while its architectural structure gives the artwork a distinctive contemporary character. I wanted this diptych to bring a feeling of openness and visual harmony without losing the expressive energy that makes an original painting unique. My hope is that its future owner will discover something new in the relationship between the two canvases with every viewing—unexpected reflections, subtle movements of color and changing impressions as natural light moves across their surfaces.
The Space Between Reflections is a one-of-a-kind original abstract diptych, created entirely by hand in 2026. Both paintings are stretched on wooden stretcher bars, ready to hang and signed on the front. The diptych is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and is sold without additional decorative frames.
