Coastal Coordinates is an original large blue and beige abstract painting by contemporary artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026 as part of the Oceanic Geometry series.
Measuring 140 × 80 cm, this horizontal acrylic painting on canvas combines ocean blue, turquoise and warm neutral tones with strong geometric forms and expressive layered textures.
The Oceanic Geometry series grew from my fascination with the meeting point between two very different visual worlds: the natural movement of water and the precision of contemporary architecture.
In Coastal Coordinates, I imagined an open coastal landscape seen through fragments of architectural structure. Horizontal lines create a sense of distance, while the strong central vertical form anchors the composition like a coordinate dividing sea, land and constructed space.
The upper part of the painting develops through layers of muted ocean blue, dusty turquoise and blue-grey. Against these cooler colors, areas of ivory, soft white, warm beige, sand, taupe and stone grey bring light and openness to the composition.
At the center, deeper passages of charcoal, blue-black, espresso brown and dark umber create a strong architectural axis. Thin horizontal lines extend across the canvas, suggesting an abstract shoreline, horizon-like division or fragments of an architectural plan without defining a specific location.
Small accents of ochre, amber and burnt sienna introduce warmth. Against the blue and neutral palette, they remind me of sunlight touching wood, stone and coastal structures. I created the surface through multiple layers of professional acrylic paint, working with palette knives and brushes and combining glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques, layering and expressive gestural marks. Some areas were painted, partially removed and rebuilt, allowing fragments of previous layers to remain visible.
From a distance, the composition feels precise and architectural. Viewed closely, scraped surfaces, broken edges, irregular marks and subtle color transitions reveal a much more spontaneous character.
This contrast is central to my Oceanic Geometry series: architecture and water, geometry and movement, structure and freedom.
Although Coastal Coordinates may evoke the sea, a marina, modern coastal architecture or a distant shoreline, it does not represent a particular place. I prefer the landscape to remain open enough for the viewer to connect it with their own memories and associations. The generous 140 × 80 cm horizontal format creates a panoramic presence, making the painting particularly effective as a statement artwork in a contemporary living room, dining area, office or modern coastal interior. Its combination of blue, turquoise, beige, ivory, taupe, charcoal and earthy warm accents works naturally with both neutral and modern interior palettes.
