Mapped by Water is an original large blue abstract triptych by contemporary artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026 as part of the Oceanic Geometry series.
The artwork consists of three 140 × 80 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, forming an impressive panoramic composition of approximately 240 × 140 cm, excluding the spaces between the panels.
The Oceanic Geometry series grew from my fascination with the meeting point between two very different visual worlds: the constant movement of water and the precision of architecture.
For Mapped by Water, I wanted to expand this dialogue across three canvases and create something that could be experienced almost like an abstract map.
I imagined a landscape shaped not by geographical borders, but by water, movement, structures, intersections and changing perspectives. It is not a map of a real place. Instead, it is an imagined geography where fragments of coastline, architecture, reflections and open water appear and disappear within the composition.
Each canvas has its own character, yet all three were conceived as parts of one visual story.
The palette moves through layers of ocean blue, pale aqua, dusty turquoise, blue-grey and soft ice blue, balanced by expansive areas of ivory, white, warm beige, greige, taupe and stone grey.
Deeper passages of charcoal, blue-black, espresso brown, dark umber and smoky grey create strong structural anchors. Accents of ochre, amber, burnt sienna and earthy brown introduce warmth and contrast against the cooler blues and luminous neutrals.
Vertical and horizontal forms repeatedly appear across the three paintings. Some resemble fragments of architecture, while others suggest coastlines, reflections, piers or divisions between water and land.
Fine linear marks add another dimension. They resemble fragments of diagrams, routes or coordinates, reinforcing the idea of an imagined map without defining a specific location. I created the paintings with professional acrylics, using palette knives and brushes and combining layering, glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques and expressive gestural mark-making.
The surfaces were repeatedly built, partially removed and reconstructed. Earlier layers remain visible through broken edges, scraped passages and translucent areas, creating depth and giving each canvas its own material history.
From a distance, Mapped by Water appears structured and architectural. Viewed closely, this order begins to dissolve into irregular textures, spontaneous gestures, subtle drips and traces of previous layers.
This contrast lies at the heart of my Oceanic Geometry series: architecture and water, geometry and movement, structure and freedom.
For me, Mapped by Water is also about our desire to organize and understand the world. We create coordinates, boundaries and structures, while water constantly changes them. The physical spaces between the three canvases are an important part of the composition. They create visual pauses, yet colors, lines and rhythms continue from one panel to another, connecting the individual paintings into a single large-scale artwork.
Although the triptych may evoke a coastline, marina, contemporary waterfront architecture or a landscape viewed from above, it does not depict a particular place. I want the viewer to be able to discover their own geography within it.
With each canvas measuring 140 × 80 cm, the complete triptych creates an impressive installation approximately 240 × 140 cm, excluding the gaps between the panels. Its combination of blue, turquoise, white, beige, grey, brown, charcoal and warm earthy accents gives the work a sophisticated contemporary character.
Mapped by Water is a one-of-a-kind original abstract triptych, painted entirely by hand in 2026. Each canvas is signed on the front, and a Certificate of Authenticity is included.
The three paintings are sold unstretched and unframed and will be carefully shipped rolled in a protective tube for safe international delivery. They can be professionally stretched onto wooden stretcher bars after arrival.
