Intersecting Stillness is an original neutral abstract diptych painting by contemporary artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026.
The artwork consists of two 70 × 90 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, stretched on wooden stretcher bars and ready to hang. Displayed together, the two panels form a large 140 × 90 cm abstract composition, excluding the space between the canvases.
I created this diptych around the idea of two separate structures finding a connection. Each canvas has its own rhythm, yet horizontal lines, layered surfaces and contrasting vertical forms create a visual dialogue between them. The space separating the paintings becomes part of the composition—a deliberate pause between two interconnected elements.
The palette is built around sophisticated neutral tones: warm beige, ivory, off-white, greige, taupe, stone grey and soft brown, contrasted with charcoal black, espresso brown and muted blue-grey. The lighter areas bring softness and openness, while the darker structural marks introduce depth and architectural definition.
I developed the paintings through multiple layers of professional acrylic paint, working with palette knives and brushes and combining glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques, layering and expressive gestural marks. Paint was repeatedly applied, partially removed and rebuilt, allowing traces of previous layers to remain visible.
This process creates a richly varied surface. From a distance, the diptych feels restrained and composed; viewed more closely, irregular edges, scraped passages, broken lines and subtle variations of beige, grey and brown reveal its tactile character.
The strong horizontal and vertical elements suggest fragments of architecture or an abstract grid without becoming rigidly geometric. I wanted structure and spontaneity to coexist—precise forms interrupted by imperfect surfaces and intuitive gestures.
For me, Intersecting Stillness explores the relationship between order and intuition, movement and stability. The two canvases are independent, yet together they create a larger visual rhythm.
Its neutral beige, taupe, grey, brown, black and blue-grey palette makes the diptych particularly versatile for contemporary interiors. The large two-panel composition can become a sophisticated focal point above a sofa, console or bed, or bring texture and architectural character to a modern living room, minimalist interior, office or open-plan space.
