Lines of Becoming is an original neutral beige abstract painting by contemporary artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026.
Measuring 85 × 85 cm, this square acrylic painting on canvas combines warm beige, ivory, black, brown, grey, pale blue and ochre tones with geometric structures, architectural lines and expressive layered textures.
I created this painting around the idea that structure does not always exist from the beginning. Sometimes it gradually emerges from fragments, intersections, spontaneous gestures and decisions made during the creative process.
I began with open fields of soft white, ivory, warm beige, greige and stone grey, creating a luminous neutral foundation. Against these quieter areas, stronger passages of charcoal black, espresso brown, deep umber and smoky grey establish the architectural character of the composition.
A cooler area of powder blue and muted blue-grey brings air and contrast into the lower part of the painting. Small but concentrated accents of ochre, amber, caramel and burnt sienna introduce warmth around the central intersection.
I wanted each color group to play a different role: the neutrals create space and stillness, the darker forms provide structure, while the blue and warm ochre accents introduce movement and visual tension.
The painting was developed through multiple layers of professional acrylic paint using palette knives and brushes. I combined layering, glazing, scraping, dry-brush techniques and expressive gestural mark-making, repeatedly adding and partially removing paint.
This process allows traces of previous layers to remain visible. Scraped passages, irregular edges and changes in opacity give the surface a sense of history and make the painting reveal new details when viewed at close range.
Fine black lines cross the composition like fragments of an architectural drawing or an unfinished spatial plan. They are interrupted by sweeping white gestures that move more freely across the surface, creating a dialogue between precision and spontaneity.
From a distance, Lines of Becoming feels structured and balanced. Up close, that apparent order becomes more complex as overlapping colors, broken lines, scraped surfaces and underlying marks become visible.
For me, the painting is about the moment when something begins to take form. I am interested in the idea that structure can emerge not from absolute control, but through experimentation, change and imperfection. The work moves between geometric abstraction, architectural abstraction and gestural painting, suggesting constructed spaces without depicting a specific building or location. Its 85 × 85 cm square format creates a strong sense of equilibrium while the asymmetrical composition keeps the image dynamic. The combination of beige, ivory, black, brown, grey, pale blue and warm ochre makes the painting particularly suited to contemporary and neutral interiors while retaining a distinctive visual identity.
